This short West Coast walk is a 1.1 km loop that is well-paved and suitable for all fitness levels.
It takes about 20 minutes to complete – longer if you stop to gawk at the views (and you will).
If you’re in a rush, you could run through the track in just 10 minutes.
The track is designed to accommodate most visitors, including young children and elderly walkers.
It features guard rails at key points near the edge of the cliffs for safety and gentle inclines that make it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs for most of the route.
However, a small section of the track near the viewing platforms includes rocky, steep stairs and uneven surfaces, which may pose challenges for some visitors.
In this case, those with mobility concerns can still enjoy the jaw-dropping views from the accessible sections of the main track.
When is the Best Time to do the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks Walk

If you visit outside of high tide, not only can you take your time without stressing about fitting it into your itinerary at a specific time, but you’ll also avoid the crowds.

How to Get There
Punakaiki is between Westport and Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s a classic stop on any West Coast road trip.
The drive from Westport to Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki typically takes around 45 minutes, and Greymouth to Pancake Rocks takes about 35 minutes.
Start at the Punakaiki Visitor Centre, follow the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes track, and soon, you’ll be surrounded by towering stacks of limestone.
