Prominent Landmarks in Pohara

The golden sands of Pohara Beach are the highlight of our visits to the area. The beautiful sea view and surrounding bushclad mountains are truly divine.

The shallow, calm waters are great for swimming during high tide. When the tide is low, it’s a fantastic flat beach for a 3.5km walk. Alternatively, you can just relax and soak up the sun and the natural surroundings.

The bay is also excellent for kayaking, fishing, windsurfing and boating activities.

The beach oozes tranquillity and is a significant landmark deserving of exploration.

On top of that, the Abel Tasman National Park is reached within 30 minutes and is one of the main attractions of the Nelson Tasman region. The emerald-green forests and secluded bays offer endless possibilities for outdoor adventures.

According to the Maori Dictionary, the word Pohara means “to be poor, hard up, destitute”. However, Pohara Golden Bay is far from poor, as you will see when you visit and witness the rich landscapes.
